Dubai Awards $177M Contract for Major Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Upgrade

Dubai Municipality has launched a landmark AED650 million ($177 million) redevelopment of Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, aimed at transforming it into a global benchmark for eco-tourism. The two-phase project will enhance biodiversity, visitor experience, and environmental resilience as part of the city’s 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Key Highlights:

  • Phase One – Ecological Rehabilitation (AED100M / $27.2M):
    • Total Area: 6.4 sq. km
    • Mangrove Expansion: 60% increase (from 40 to 65 hectares)
    • Water Bodies: 144% expansion (to 74 hectares), boosting CO₂ absorption
    • New Habitats:
      • Mangrove Lake
      • North Edge Lake
      • Reed ponds
    • Salt Flats: 10 hectares of new mudflats
    • Green Spine: A natural corridor with continuous ecological monitoring
    • Wildlife Impact: Home to 20,000 migratory birds annually; expected to attract 250,000–300,000 visitors per year
  • Phase Two – Visitor Experience & Infrastructure:
    • Total Area: 20,000 sq. m
    • Facilities:
      • Visitor centre
      • Birdwatching towers
      • Restaurants & kiosks
      • Educational centres
    • Trails:
      • 5.6 km cycling tracks
      • 3 km walking paths
    • Landscaping: 23 hectares of new green zones
    • Community Engagement: Event spaces and awareness programs

    • Project aligns with Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan
    • Recognized under the Ramsar Convention (since 2007) and IUCN classification
    • Hosts nearly 450 species of flora and fauna
